Copamos la Calle 8M

Since the beginning of the year, my friends and I have been skating the streets a lot. I’m a photographer, and what I enjoy the most is shooting street skate photos. But I realized that many girls still don’t feel confident skating in the streets, either because they don’t have someone to go with or because they don’t know the spots. So we usually end up at the skatepark (which is great!! but the streets have a different kind of vibe).
The weekend before International Women’s Day, after an amazing street session, I thought it could be a great idea to organize an open call to go street skating together.
I quickly made a flyer with the idea of “taking over the streets” for Women’s Day, posted it on Instagram, and got flooded with messages from girls excited about the initiative.
On the day of the meetup, when I arrived at the meeting point, I found more than 30 girls of all ages, coming from different parts of Buenos Aires, all ready to go skate the streets.
We explored several spots around Puerto Madero and downtown: La Aduana, Los Planos, Maderito, and then we ended up at the skatepark.
What surprised me the most is that something so spontaneous, with no sponsors, no competition, and barely any planning, managed to bring together so many women to skate on the same day.
It makes me really happy to see them claiming space, showing up, and skating together. I hope this was the spark for more and more girls to take over the streets, lose their fear, and make the city their own terrain too.

Desde que empezó el año estuvimos callejeando bastante con mis amigas. Soy fotógrafa y lo que más disfruto es hacer fotos de patín en la calle. Pero me di cuenta de que muchas pibas todavía no se animan a patinar en la calle, ya sea porque no tienen con quién o porque no conocen los spots. Entonces terminamos siempre en un skatepark (que está buenísimo, pero la calle tiene un sabor distinto).
El fin de semana previo al 8M, después de una sesión de calle increíble, se me ocurrió que podía ser una buena idea hacer una convocatoria para salir a callejear el Día de la Mujer.
Rápidamente armé un flyer con la consigna de “copar la calle” y lo subí a Instagram. Me llovieron mensajes de pibas emocionadas por la iniciativa.
El día del encuentro, cuando llegué al punto de reunión, me encontré con más de 30 pibas de todas las edades, de distintos barrios de la ciudad y del conurbano bonaerense, listas para salir a patinar la calle.
Recorrimos varios spots de la zona de Puerto Madero y el centro: la Aduana, Los Planos, Maderito, y terminamos en el skatepark.
Lo que más me sorprendió fue que algo que surgió de manera tan espontánea (sin sponsors, sin competencia y sin demasiada planificación) logró reunir a tantas mujeres un mismo día para patinar.
Me emociona mucho que se hayan animado a ocupar la calle, a hacerse lugar y patinar juntas. Ojalá esta haya sido la chispa para que cada vez más pibas se apropien del espacio, pierdan el miedo y hagan de la calle también su terreno.
