We had a little chat with Silvia to learn more about her new pro bearings.
The Rock Star Pro bearings carry your name. Tell us a little more about the design and what makes them special?
The design process was a collaboration between me and Moco (@moc.o), who I’ve skated and collaborated creatively with before. When she made the RSB tour video 3 years ago that I was a part of, it felt like the first time someone had represented me with care in a video before, showing different sides of me and the other skaters in the video and telling a really beautiful and fun story of our roadtrip. Also, I’ve been a fan of her design approach for a long time. So I knew she’d do a great job. I had a lot of fun drawing and brainstorming with her. It’s also very special to be able to combine two of my passions, skating and visual art, into a project together.
The bearings are RSB’s metal bearings, which are the cheaper option that RSB carries while still maintaining very good quality. I’ve been riding them for years, and I chose the metal bearings because I wanted to keep the price accessible. Skating is such an expensive sport, and many people can't afford to support brands and skaters they love because of price points.
You’ve just received your first pro product. What does that feel like?
It feels amazing:) It felt surreal at the beginning of the process, but after putting a couple years and hundreds of hours into the designing, filming, photographing processes, as well as communicating across 4 different countries and time zones to make this project happen, it feels very satisfying to finally release it into the world. I have gained a lot of respect for what it takes to do a project like this.
More importantly though, I see this project as something that could be very impactful to the skate community. Though our industry isn’t big enough to be able to support skaters financially in the way that other industries like skateboarding can, i.e. basically nobody can make a living off of just skating, pro products are an incredible opportunity to support skaters in a way that’s also financially feasible for the brands. We’ve had many years of skaters creating content that is used as advertising and marketing campaigns in exchange for product (or sometimes just “exposure”) from brands , and a lot of skaters feel fatigued from this often uneven exchange. If this project can spark more brands and skaters to have conversations about pro products, I believe that would lift up the whole skate community.
It’s not just a financial conversation of course, as these kinds of projects also spread stoke and inspiration to make videos and designs and just generally to get out and skate!
Also, the community aspect is a big part of making videos like this one as I got to premiere it at B Roll (@cph.b.roll), which is an event I helped to organize along with an amazing group of skaters here in Copenhagen and the premiere night brought people together:)
You’ve been building your skating career for several years, from competitions and tours to videos, magazines, and now your own pro product. What can we expect from you next? Any new projects or trips in the works?
I had the opportunity to be a skater and actor in a feature film recently! It’s called Destroy All Girls (@destryallgirls) and had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, and will be having a couple more showings in film festivals around the world. And will hopefully be available to stream in the near future! I also filmed a street video with the Friends With Benefits crew (@fwb.skate) in New York City before I left (Alex @_pisces_nyc_ filmed it and is editing it now, he also filmed and edited this RSB video) that will hopefully be out soon, as well as more projects with this crew. I’m always skating and filming and love to teach workshops and private lessons whenever I travel, so my instagram is the best way to follow that. I’ll be in Greece next month and am hoping to host a workshop there!
