Capturing the essence of eight wheels in Puerto Escondido.

When you hear about Puerto Escondido, the first things that come to mind are beach days, coconuts, and surfboards. But in April 2026, the streets got ready to welcome something different: the sound of “eight wheels.”

As both a participant and the event photographer, I got to experience this celebration from the inside. It all went down as part of the Rudarte graphic festival, where the official venue, Boneyard, opened its doors to what has easily been the best gathering of the year so far.

From the moment Bravas con Quads dropped the flyer, the anticipation started building. We knew this trip was going to be something special. Skaters from all over the country began packing their bags. We had people coming in from Guadalajara, Monterrey, Cuernavaca, Pachuca, Nayarit, Huatulco, Mexico City, plus a few international skaters from Spain, Colombia, and Argentina

Cuando escuchas hablar de Puerto Escondido, lo primero que te viene a la mente es playita, cocos y las tablas de surf. Sin embargo, en este abril de 2026, las calles se prepararon para recibir algo distinto: el sonido de las "8 Ruedas".

Como participante y fotógrafa del evento, me tocó vivir desde adentro esta celebración que se realizó dentro del festival de gráfica Rudarte, donde la sede oficial, Boneyard, nos abrió las puertas para la que ha sido, sin duda, la mejor convivencia de lo que va del año.

Desde que la comunidad de Bravas con Quads lanzó el flyer, la expectativa se fue generando. Sabíamos que este viaje sería una gran experiencia. Patinadorxs de diferentes partes del país comenzamos a preparar maletas para el evento; tuvimos representantes de Guadalajara, Monterrey, Cuernavaca, Pachuca, Nayarit, Huatulco, CDMX y algunas internacionales de España, Colombia y Argentina.

Even though the official start was Thursday, my lens and my skates landed Friday afternoon at Ojotón skatepark. There’s something almost mystical about this place. It’s the oldest park in Puerto, and more importantly, the first self-managed spot in the area. Here, the survival of the park depends on everyone’s sweat and contribution. It was our first real touchpoint: a session where quad skaters, skateboarders, and even kids with their fingerboards shared the space, skating for some best trick prizes.

Aunque el calendario marcaba el inicio el jueves, mi lente y mis patines aterrizaron el viernes por la tarde en el skatepark Ojotón. Hay algo místico en este lugar; es el parque más antiguo de Puerto y, sobre todo, el primer spot autogestivo de la zona. Aquí, la permanencia de los spots depende del sudor y la contribución de todxs. Fue nuestra primera toma de contacto: una sesión donde rollers, skates y hasta los más peques con sus fingerboards compartieron el espacio patinando por algunos premios que se darían a los best tricks.

As night fell, Majo and the El Lugar crew welcomed us for a screening of video parts sent in from around the world. It was the perfect spark to get everyone hyped for what was coming next.

Saturday started early, pushing against the heat. We split into workshops at El Lugar, where the instructors shared their techniques on both the mini ramp and the street area. Between sessions, some of us escaped to explore Guajes, a park still under construction but already full of incredible spots for both beginners and advanced skaters. One lesson became very clear: in Puerto, you either skate early or the midday sun takes you out.

Al caer la noche nos recibió Majo y el equipo de El Lugar, para la proyección de videopartes enviadas desde distintas partes del mundo, que terminaron de encender los motores para lo que venía.

El sábado arrancó temprano, desafiando al sol. Nos dividimos en talleres en El Lugar, donde las profes nos compartieron su técnica tanto en la mini ramp como en la zona de street. Entre toma y toma, algunxs escapamos a explorar Guajes; un parque que, aunque sigue en proceso de construcción, ya ofrece spots increíbles para principiantes y avanzadxs. Eso sí, la lección fue clara: en Puerto, o patinas muy temprano o el calor del mediodía te consume.

Entre actividades, el ritual era sagrado: correr a la playa, dejar que el mar nos limpiara el cansancio y observar el atardecer con lxs amix.

By the afternoon, all roads led to the Boneyard bowl. Watching More and Cami lead the beginner and intermediate workshops set the tone. Then the energy flipped with the Cash for Tricks session, turning the bowl into a boiling mix of quads and skateboards. Capturing the effort on every face, and the unconditional support from everyone watching, made it clear that competition here is just an excuse to strengthen friendships.

In between sessions, the ritual was sacred: run to the beach, let the ocean wash away the fatigue, and watch the sunset with friends. Those quiet moments are what give meaning to everything after an intense day of skating.

Para la tarde, la cita obligada fue en el bowl de Boneyard. Ver a More y Cami liderar los talleres para principiantes e intermedias fue el preámbulo perfecto. La tensión y la emoción estallaron con el Cash for Tricks, donde el bowl se convirtió en un hervidero de quads y skates. Captar el esfuerzo en cada rostro y el apoyo incondicional de quienes observaban fue entender que aquí la competencia es solo un pretexto para fortalecer la amistad.

Entre actividades, el ritual era sagrado: correr a la playa, dejar que el mar nos limpiara el cansancio y observar el atardecer con lxs amix. Esos momentos de quietud son los que le dan sentido a todo después de la intensa patinada.

Sunday arrived with that mix of exhaustion and adrenaline. The nerves for the final competition were in the air, but we grounded ourselves with ice baths and some unforgettable enchiladas that brought us back to life. By the afternoon, back at Boneyard for the main event, the level of skating was unreal. From the beginner category to the advanced riders, the commitment to style and technique was undeniable.

El domingo llegó con esa mezcla de cansancio y adrenalina. Los nervios por la competencia final flotaban en el ambiente, pero logramos calmarnos entre ice baths y unas enchiladas memorables que nos devolvieron el alma al cuerpo. Ya en la tarde, en el evento estelar en Boneyard, el nivel fue impresionante. Desde las chicas de categoría principiante hasta las avanzadas, el compromiso con el estilo y la técnica fue absoluto.

At the end of it all, what stays with me, both in my camera and in my memory, isn’t just who landed the best trick. It’s the support network we’ve built. Quad skating in Mexico has created a safe and empowering space for women and gender-diverse skaters, a place where the rawness of street skating blends with the technical flow of the bowl. Puerto Escondido is no longer just a surf town. It’s now an official refuge for eight wheels.

Al final del día, lo que queda registrado en mi cámara y en mi memoria no es solo quién hizo el mejor truco, sino la red de apoyo que hemos construido. El quad skate en México ha logrado consolidar un espacio seguro y empoderador para mujeres y disidencias, un lugar donde la rudeza del skate de calle se funde con la fluidez técnica del bowl. Puerto Escondido ya no es solo tierra de surfistas; ahora es el refugio oficial de las ocho ruedas.
